The Sangiovese grape is known to make red wines that are high in tannin and acidity. The grape’s name comes from the Latin phrase “sanguis Jovis,” which means “the blood of Jupiter.” The grape grows well in the Tuscany area of Italy. Many wine enthusiasts enjoy the grape’s fresh, fruity flavors that follow up with a little kick of spice.
As a trusted beverage distributor in Oregon and Washington, we want to ensure our clients and their clientele are educated about the beverages in our portfolio. Here, our team talks about San Polo Rubio Sangiovese.
All About Sangiovese Grapes
Even though the Sangiovese grape is the most widely planted variety in Italy, you won’t find the Sangiovese name on most wine bottles. The Sangiovese grape is dominant in Chianti blends of red wine and is one of the most popular types of grapes to make wine with. The Sangiovese grape is considered the workhorse grape because of its varied uses in many types of wine. Wines that are made with Sangiovese typically are dry and are high in acidity and tannins. They also tend to be light and bright in color.
San Polo Rubio Sangiovese is best enjoyed chilled, although a brief use of a decanter can help soften the tannins and bring out the fruit flavors. This variety of wine is versatile and pairs well with a wide range of foods, especially Italian and Italian American dishes.
Delicious Blend of Flavors
San Polo Rubio Sangiovese is known for its deep red color and its diversity of flavors that wine enthusiasts can taste in each glass. Aged in neutral oak barrels, a Sangiovese wine can have many flavors in its profile, including, but not limited to:
- Tart cherry
- Red plum
- Strawberry
- Fig
- Vanilla
- Roasted Pepper
- Tomato
- Leather
- Clay
- Brick
- Tobacco
- Smoke
- Oregano
- Thyme
- Dried Roses
- Potpourri
As it ages, a wine made with Sangiovese grapes can evolve to have notes of violets, blood oranges, and bay leaves. The flavors of a Sangiovese wine will vary depending on where it is grown and what it is blended with.
San Polo Rubio Sangiovese is produced at a winery founded on principles of sustainability and green agriculture. The grapes are organically farmed, and the winery has earned the esteemed CasaClima Sustainability Certification.
Celebrate Trinchero Heritage Month
February is Trinchero Heritage Month. How much do you know about the Trinchero family? The Trinchero family began in Italy before moving to New York City. In 1947, Mario Trinchero moved from NYC to find a better life for his family. He and his brother, John, purchased Sutter Home Winery. In 1948, they experienced their first harvest. Later, Mario’s son, Bob, joined the family business.
Trinchero Family Estates has garnered an impressive reputation over the years. In 1971, it released the popular 1968 Sutter Home California Zinfandel. They gained worldwide recognition for their Original White Zinfandel, the first of its kind. Sutter Home’s White Zinfandel became the best-selling wine in the United States by 1987. By 1989, 2.7 million cases of White Zinfandel were being produced a year.
An unwavering commitment to improvement has allowed Trinchero Family Estates to grow considerably over the years. It’s also earned the family several accolades. Trinchero Family Estates was named Wine Enthusiast’s American Winery of the Year in 2009. In 2012, a spirits division was added. It won Winery Portfolio of the Year at San Francisco International Wine Competition in 2014.
Trinchero Family Estates has also earned recognition for leadership. In 2017, Wine Enthusiast honored Bob and Roger Trinchero with their Lifetime Achievement Award. Bob Torkelson was named Wine Executive of the Year in 2019.
Today, Trinchero Family Estates has over 50 wines and spirits from around the world in its portfolio. Celebrate Trinchero Heritage Month with us this February!
