How Sierra Nevada Got Its Start
Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. is one of the founding companies from the beginning of the craft beer movement.
Ken Grossman started with a five-gallon batch of beer made with a purchased home brewing kit. He was already an expert in his craft by the time home-brewing was legalized around in 1978. However, legalization allowed him to become more serious about craft beer, and he eventually connected with other pioneers in the craft brew industry.
After experimenting and finding the right flavors, he decided to open a home-brew shop in 1976. He soon expanded his goals and began building a brewery in Chico, California. In 1980, Grossman officially opened Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. He got the name from the iconic California mountains, as they were Grossman’s favorite place to adventure while growing up.
Pioneering the Craft Beer Movement
Grossman wanted craft beers with unique and strong flavors – something that American beer was lacking at the time. There were roughly 40 breweries in the nation, and Grossman wanted to fill the need for flavorful beverages.
Grossman and his colleagues sought to create brews with distinct flavors, different from the “industrial lager” beverage that was popular at the time. Incorporating heavy hop flavors and ingredients allowed them to add intense, delicious aromas.
The first beer released by Sierra Nevada was a stout, with the brewery’s iconic Pale Ale following soon after.
Sierra Nevada’s craft beer is unique because it uses only whole-cone hops instead of hop pellets or extracts. This gives their brews enhanced flavor and unmatched taste.
When Sierra Nevada first made its mark, they were one of a dozen craft breweries in the U.S. Now, the United States is home to thousands of breweries that create flavorful, unique brews. Sierra Nevada continues to remain an innovator and leader in the craft beer industry.
Sierra Nevada has continued innovating by introducing sustainability goals to reduce their carbon footprint in the 2010s. In 2012, they switched from electricity to solar panel power, harnessing much of their energy through this alternative source.
