Eco-Friendly Packaging and Other Sustainability Shifts at KDP

Keurig Dr Pepper 3 cans of 7Up

This Earth Month, Columbia Distributing celebrates beverage companies that have made tremendous progress toward creating a healthier, safer Earth. One company focused on sustainability is Keurig Dr Pepper (KDP).

In 2018, Keurig Green Mountain Inc. and Dr Pepper Snapple Group merged to create KDP and started finding new ways to improve sustainability. Now, they have many goals to enhance business processes and reduce their carbon footprint.

Below we share the beginnings of KDP their goals toward becoming a greener workplace, and their popular beverage brands.

Popular Products By KDP

KDP is known for its large variety of well-known brands and drink products including:

7 Up

7 Up is a popular lemon-lime-flavored soda with a satisfying, carbonated kick. Customers love its refreshing, 100% natural flavors and crisp texture.

Snapple

Snapple is an iconic drink brand that features fruit flavors. Customers are drawn to the delicious flavors and interesting “Snapple Facts” under the drink caps. While they used to be known for their glass bottles, Snapple recently changed to recyclable plastic bottles to enhance sustainability efforts.

Bai

Bai is a healthy water alternative with antioxidants, electrolytes, zinc, and vitamin C. All these ingredients aim to increase immune system support. Bai comes in many flavors, like watermelon, blueberry, and coconut, and gets its sweet taste from stevia, a natural sweetener.

Canada Dry

Canada Dry is a popular brand that makes crisp, refreshing ginger ale. Its real ginger taste offers a laid-back appeal, while the carbonation provides a satisfying, bubbly texture.

A&W

When it comes to root beer, A&W has the industry on lock. It’s made with real cane sugar, providing a classic sweet root beer flavor. Add A&W root beer to some vanilla ice cream for a delicious dessert.

Changing the Planet With Sustainability Goals

KDP wants to make the planet a healthier place to live through sustainability. To do this, they have implemented sustainability goals that they continuously work toward meeting. In 2024, they plan to select suppliers and bottlers that will help reduce Scope 3 emissions (greenhouse gas emissions beyond their own operations). They also want to reduce the amount of plastic in packaging by 20% in the same year.

By 2025, KDP wants 100% of its electricity to be supplied by renewable energy sources. They also plan to enhance water use efficiency by 20%, as well as switch 100% of their packaging to recyclable or compostable materials. They then plan to reuse and recycle waste packaging. This helps them meet their goal of producing zero waste in landfills at all facilities.

KDP’s commitment to sustainability won’t end any time soon. They want to continue making changes and improving processes through 2030. In addition to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the company plans to work with the highest water-risk operating communities to regenerate 100% of the water used for beverage production. Eventually, they want to find ways to source 100% of their coffee and cocoa products responsibly. They also aim to support agriculture and land conservation.

KDP also wants to change how they run operations, opting for more representation of women and people of color (POC). They want to increase female representation in director positions by 25% to 33% in the coming years. They also plan to enhance POC representation in managerial positions by 21% to 25%. They hope to implement these goals by 2025.
